Military Time Map

Zulu and Military Time Zones

Military and aviation organizations use letter-coded time zones to avoid confusion across different regions. Each time zone is assigned a letter (A–Z, excluding J) and a NATO phonetic name.

How Zulu Time Works

  • Zulu (Z) represents UTC±0, the base global reference.
  • Each other zone adds or subtracts hours from UTC, marked by a letter.
  • Example: 0600R = “zero six hundred Romeo” = 6:00 AM Eastern Standard Time (UTC−5).
  • Local time (no specific offset) is designated J or “Juliet.”
