Zermatt is a popular Swiss municipality in the Kanton of Valais(Wallis) and lower border district of Visp in a predominately German-fluent talking region. Zermatt has a close population of about 5,800 local inhabitants in the city area.
The small town is situated at the end of Mattertal at an altitude of 1,620 meters (5,315 feet), at the base of Switzerland's tallest peaks. It lies about 10 km (6 miles) from the over 3,300 meters high Theodul Pass bordering the country of Italy.
Zermatt is famed as a mountaineering and ski resort hub of the Swiss Alps.
Zermatt is famous for it's steep scenic mountaineering and iconic skiing resort in the high Swiss Alps. Until about the mid nineteenth century, it was mostly an agricultural and dairy(cheese) region; the first and historic tragic ascent of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper in 1865 was followed by many other climbers on the mountains wanting to make a name for themselves, leading to the construction of many climbing, skiing, and tourism lodgings. Much of the local economy is now collected from tourism, with about 1/2 of the local employment in town in resorts, hotels, and local restaurants. Just under half of all of Zermatt's homes are vacation apartments. Just over 1/3 of the year-round population was born in the area, while another third that found jobs or can afford it moved to Zermatt from other countries.
Zermatt has twenty-nine mountains over 13,000feet. It has nine of the ten highest mountains in Europe that still have lofty glaciers up on them. Zermatt also has longest winter skiing usage in Europe due to the glacier skiing(late November to May). They also have the highest ski lift running in Europe which is on Klein Matterhorn - Gobba di Rollin at 12,830 feet. And the biggest summer skiing slope(s) area in the European Alps (year round 9 ski lifts are operating). And the longest permanently open skiing run in Europe ( Klein Matterhorn to Zermatt thirteen Kilometers - which is open from late November to mid April).
