Curry Village (Camp Curry)
History
In the year 1899 Mr. David Curry and Jenny Etta Foster opened a Yosemite Valley floor tent camp so that visiting guests could enjoy the intense beauty of Yosemite for a affordable price. They advertised "a nice bed and clean linens with every meal" for just two dollars a day and was was a hit. Camp Curry celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1999 and it still offers park visitors good lodging in the shadow of the spectacular Glacier Point and Half Dome.
The Camp Curry post office opened in 1909, and changed to its present name to Curry Village in 1970.
Location
Curry Village is in the heart of Yosemite vibe. Curry Village sits in an ideal wooded area in Yosemite Valley directly beneath towering Glacier Point and next to the cool Merced River with stunning views of Half Dome in the background. Shallow Mirror Lake is a short walk from the camp as is nearby Yosemite Falls. Staircase Falls, on Gossamer Creek, drops into the Yosemite Valley directly behind Curry Village from Glacier Point.
Rock Fall
A huge rockfall occurred in Yosemite National Park at approximately 7:00 am on October 8, 2008 near Curry Village in eastern Yosemite Valley. Park officials estimated the large rockfall volume at approximately 1,800 cubic yards, which released near the halfway point up the granite face above Curry Village.
Three nearby visitors received minor injuries during the incident. All three were treated in the valley and released. The rockfall destroyed an estimated seven visitor cabins; two hard sided, and three platform tent cabins. At least three other park cabins received partial damage in the incident.
