Historic Eastern Sierra Trout Planting and Stocking Locations








BISHOP CREEK, (Middle to Intake II)--Turn west on West Line Street in Bishop and continue 15 miles to Intake II. Trout are planted from Intake II to Cardinal Lodge and from Lake Sabrina downstream to the North Lake turnoff.

BAKER CREEK --Take Highway 395 to the north end of Big Pine. Turn west on the County Campground road just north of the ball field in Big Pine and travel 1-Ω miles to the campgrounds. Fish are planted in the campground area.

BIG PINE CREEK--Turn west off of Highway 395 at the Chevron station located in the center of Big Pine and continue to the top of the grade. The creek is planted from Sage Flat Campgrounds to Glacier Lodge.

BISHOP CREEK, LOWER--Take Highway 395 to the town of Bishop. Turn west on West Line Street and continue to Bullpit and Izaak Walton parks. Plants are made upstream from Bullpit Park to Powerline Road.

BISHOP CREEK, (Middle to Intake II)--Turn west on West Line Street in Bishop and continue 15 miles to Intake II. Trout are planted from Intake II to Cardinal Lodge and from Lake Sabrina downstream to the North Lake turnoff.

BISHOP CREEK, SOUTH FORK--From Bishop, turn west on West Line Street and continue to the South Lake turnoff just below Intake II; turn left at the fork. The creek is planted at access points from Habegger's to the U.S. Forest Service Campgrounds and from Parcher's Resort to Weir Lake.

DIAZ LAKE--Located on the west side of Highway 395, three miles south of Lone Pine.

COTTONWOOD CREEK--From Highway 395, turn west at the Cottonwood Power House turnoff located about 10 miles south of Lone Pine. Keep to the left as you cross the Los Angeles Aqueduct. The creek is planted from the campgrounds at the power house intake to the end of the road.

GEORGE CREEK--Approximately 7 miles south of Independence on Highway 395 turn south on the small road located one-quarter mile northwest of the Los Angeles Aqueduct crossing. The fish are planted at the sand trap.

GOODALE CREEK--Travel Highway 395 to approximately 13 miles north of Independence. At Aberdeen, turn west and continue past Old Highway 395. Fish are planted from Aberdeen Resort, upstream for approximately two miles and within the BLM Campgrounds.

INDEPENDENCE CREEK--Turn west off Highway 395 on the road just north of the Independence Post Office in Independence. The trout are planted from Independence Campground, located one-half mile west of Independence to where the main road crosses the creek above Seven Pines Village, a distance of about 7 miles.

LONE PINE CREEK, LOWER--From Highway 395 turn west at the traffic signal located in the center of Lone Pine. The creek is planted at access points from the Los Angeles Aqueduct to Lone Pine Campgrounds.

LONE PINE CREEK, UPPER--Travel Highway 395 to Lone Pine. Turn west at the traffic signal located in the center of Lone Pine aka Whitney Portal Road and continue up the grade for 13 miles. The fish are planted at the campgrounds along the creek from this point to the pond at Whitney Portal Store.

NORTH LAKE--From Highway 395, turn west on West Line Street in Bishop and continue up the grade for approximately 18 miles. Turn right at the North Lake sign.

OWENS RIVER, SECTION II Laws Bridge to Steward Lane - In the Bishop area, turn east off Highway 395 on East Line Street or Highway 6, Warm Springs Road or Collins Road. The trout are planted from Laws Bridge on Highway 6 to Collins Road. In the Big Pine area, Westgard Pass Road or on Steward Lane. The river is planted at these sites.


OWENS RIVER BELOW TINEMAHA RESERVOIR--Travel to approximately 20 miles north of Independence. Turn east on Wildlife Viewpoint dirt road and continue about 1/4 mile to water keeper's house. Turn south and continue to the river. Fish are planted at locations below this point.

PINE CREEK - Travel Highway 395 to approximately 15 miles north of Bishop. Turn off on Pine Creek Road and drive west to where the road crosses the creek. Creek is planted at this point up to where the road crosses the creek at the Union Carbide storage area.

PLEASANT VALLEY RESERVOIR - From Bishop, drive north on Highway 395 approximately seven miles to sign indicating reservoir turnoff. Turn right off highway and continue about one and one-half miles to barrier across road. Walk the short distance to dam. Reservoir is planted March through June and September through November.

ROCK CREEK, SECTION III - From Highway 395, turn west at Tom's Place, located 30 miles north of Bishop (Rock Creek Road). Turn right when the road ends at Rock Creek Lake. The creek is planted from the first point where the road crosses the creek to the end of the road.

ROCK CREEK LAKE - From Highway 395, turn west at Tom's Place located 30 miles north of Bishop (Rock Creek Road), and follow the road to the lake.

SABRINA LAKE--Drive to Bishop on Highway 395 and turn west on West Line Street. Follow the signs to the lake, located approximately 20 miles southwest of Bishop.

SHEPERDS CREEK - Turn east at the road with a cattle guard, located approximately 5 miles south of Independence on Highway 395. Follow the road until it ends at the Los Angeles Aqueduct. Turn right and continue to the creek. The trout are planted at the sand trap where the road meets the creek.

SOUTH LAKE - Travel to Bishop via Highway 395 and turn west on West Line Street aka Highway 168. Continue for approximately 15 miles to the South Lake Road turnoff. Turn left and drive for an additional 6 miles to the lake.

SYMMES CREEK - Turn west off Highway 395 on the road just north of the Independence Post Office in Independence. Continue to Foothill Road and turn left. Follow the road to Symmes Creek Campground. The creek is stocked at the campground.

TABOOSE CREEK - Travel Highway 395 to 14 miles north of Independence and turn west at the Taboose Creek Campgrounds sign. Turn left at the first road past Old Highway 395 and continue to the stream. The creek is stocked in the campgrounds from Old Highway 395 to 1 mile up stream.

TINEMAHA CREEK - Drive to approximately 8 miles south of Big Pine and turn west off Highway 395 at the South Fish Springs Hatchery road sign. Turn left on TINEMEHA Creek Road and continue on this road to Inyo County Campgrounds. The creek is planted at the campgrounds.

TUTTLE CREEK - Travel Highway 395 to Lone Pine and turn west at the traffic signal in the center of town. Continue up the road (Whitney Portal Road) for 3 miles to Horseshoe Meadow Road and turn left. Drive for about 2 miles to the Tuttle Creek Campgrounds. The creek is planted at access points in the campgrounds.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR - Turn north off Highway 395 at Highway 22 at the south city limits of Bridgeport and continue for approximately 3 miles to the lake.

BUCKEYE CREEK - Travel Highway 395 to the west end of Bridgeport and turn south at Twin Lakes Road. Continue for approximately 8 miles and turn south at Twin Lakes Road. Continue for approximately 8 miles and turn north on Buckeye Creek Road located at Doc and Al's Pack Station. Proceed for another 4 miles to where the road crosses the creek. The trout are planted from this location upstream and in Buckeye Campground.

CONVICT CREEK - Travel Highway 395 to 10 miles south of Mammoth Lakes and turn west on Convict Lake Road. The creek is planted from Highway 395 to the campgrounds at the east end of Convict Lake.

CONVICT LAKE - Travel Highway 395 to 10 miles south of Mammoth Lakes and turn west on Convict Lake Road. Continue for approximately 2 miles to the lake.

CROWLEY LAKE - The most popular eastern Sierra fishing lake, Crowley is located 37 miles north of Bishop just off Highway 395. Turn east at the Crowley Lake sign to enter at the south end of the lake. Drive farther north on Highway 395 to Benton Crossing Road. Turn east and follow road to north lake entrance.

ROCK CREEK, SECTION I - Travel Highway 395 to Tom's Place, approximately 20 miles north of Bishop. The creek is planted in Tuff Campground across the highway from Tom's Place. Continue south from this point on Highway 395 approximately 1 mile to Old Highway 395 and turn south. The creek is planted along Old Highway 395 to Paradise Lodge.

DEADMAN CREEK - Travel Highway 395 to 9 miles north of Mammoth Lake Junction. Turn west on White Wing Camp Road and drive 6 miles to Deadman Campground. The creek is planted in the campground area.

ELLERY LAKE - Drive Highway 395 to one-quarter mile south of the town of Lee Vining and turn west on Highway 120, the Tioga Pass Road. The lake is located approximately 12 miles distant on the south side of the road.

GEORGE LAKE - Travel Highway 395 to approximately 12 miles north of Crowley Lake and turn west on Mammoth Lakes Road. Drive past Twin Lakes and bear left at the fork in the road to Lake Mary and follow the Forest Service signs to Lake George.

GLASS CREEK - Drive 10 miles north of Mammoth Lakes on Highway 395 and turn west on the road located across from Crestview Maintenance Station. Continue for one-half mile to the creek crossing. The stream is planted in the campground area north of the road.

GRANT LAKE - Turn west off Highway 395 onto the June Lake Loop Road, north. Continue to the lake.

GREEN CREEK - Travel Highway 395 to approximately five miles south of Bridgeport. Turn west on Green Creek Road and continue for about eight miles to Dymano Pond (located on right). Proceed for an additional four miles to the campground located on left side of road. Fish are planted in campground area and at access points to the end of the road.

GULL LAKE - Turn west off Highway 395 onto the June Lake Loop Road, south. Continue through June Lake Village to Gull Lake.

JUNE LAKE - Turn west off Highway 395 onto June Lake Loop Road, south. June Lake is approximately 1-Ω miles from the turnoff.

LEE VINING CREEK - Drive one-quarter mile south of the town of Lee Vining on Highway 395 and turn west on Highway 120. Continue for approximately 3 miles to Azusa Camp Road. The creek is planted along the road that parallels the creek from Azusa Camp Road, and for 5 miles to the bridge where the road crosses the creek.

LEE VINING CREEK, SOUTH FORK - Travel to one-quarter mile south of Lee Vining on Highway 395 and turn west on Highway 120. Continue on Highway 120 for 15 miles to just past Ellery Lake. The creek is planted from the west end of Ellery Lake to Tioga Lake, located 1 mile south of Ellery Lake.

LUNDY LAKE - Turn west off Highway 395 at Lundy Lake Road, located 6 miles north of the town of Lee Vining. Continue west on Lundy Lake Road to the lake located at the end of the road.

MAMIE LAKE - Turn west off Highway 395 at Mammoth Lakes Road located approximately 10 miles north of Crowley Lake. Continue on Mammoth Lakes Road past Twin Lakes to Mamie Lake.

MAMMOTH CREEK - Drive on Highway 395 to Highway 203, the road to Mammoth Lakes, and turn west. Drive to Mammoth Lakes and turn left on Old Mammoth Road. Continue to a road that is located just before the bridge and turn left. The creek is planted at access points from the bridge downstream to Old Highway 395.

MARY LAKE - Travel Highway 395 to approximately 12 miles north of Crowley Lake and turn west on Mammoth Lakes Road. Continue past Twin Lakes and bear left at the Fork in the road to Lake Mary.

MCGEE CREEK - Drive 28 miles north of Bishop, on Highway 395 and turn west on McGee Road located just past the McGee Lodge. Continue one-quarter mile south on Old Highway 395 to McGee Pack Station Road. The creek is planted off access roads from Old Highway 395 to Upper Campground.

MILL CREEK - Turn west off Highway 395, at Lundy Lake Road located 6 miles north of Lee Vining. The creek is stocked at access points along the road from Highway 395 to the lake.

OWENS RIVER, SECTION III - Drive 35 miles north of Bishop on Highway 395 and turn east on Benton Crossing Road. Continue on Benton Crossing Road to the bridge. The trout are planted at access points one-half mile upstream and 2 miles downstream from bridge.

OWENS RIVER, SECTION IV - Drive Highway 395 to approximately 8 miles north of Highway 203, the Mammoth Lakes turnoff, and turn east on Big Springs Road. Continue for 5 miles and then turn north at the Big Springs Campgrounds turnoff. The river is planted at the campgrounds.

REVERSE CREEK - Drive north on Highway 395 to the June Lake Loop Road and turn west. Continue past June and Gull lakes to the point where the road crosses the creek. The stream is planted from access roads from this point, just east of Carson Peak Inn, to Dream Mountains Resort, located just off the June Loop Road across from Whispering Pines Resort.

ROBINSON CREEK - Travel Highway 395 to Twin Lakes Road at the north end of Bridgeport and turn south. The creek is planted at the bridge at Doc and Al's Resort on the road that goes to Buckeye Creek, and at campground access points along Twin Lakes Road from Doc and Al's to Lower Twin Lakes.

CROWLEY LAKE - The most popular eastern Sierra fishing lake, Crowley is located 37 miles north of Bishop just off Highway 395. Turn east at the Crowley Lake sign to enter at the south end of the lake. Drive farther north on Highway 395 to Benton Crossing Road. Turn east and follow road to north lake entrance.

ROCK CREEK, SECTION I - Travel Highway 395 to Tom's Place, approximately 20 miles north of Bishop. The creek is planted in Tuff Campground across the highway from Tom's Place. Continue south from this point on Highway 395 approximately 1 mile to Old Highway 395 and turn south. The creek is planted along Old Highway 395 to Paradise Lodge.

RUSH CREEK - Drive on Highway 395 to the June Lake Loop Road and turn west. Continue to Silver Lake. The creek is planted at access points from the Southern California Edison power plant bridge, north to the lake and in Silver Lake Campgrounds located north of the lake, and for approximately one-quarter mile north of the campgrounds.

SADDLEBAG CREEK - Follow the instructions for finding Saddlebag Lake. The creek is planted from the Saddlebag Lake turnoff to approximately one-half mile upstream.

WALKER RIVER, SECTION III - Travel Highway 395 to 17 miles north of Bridgeport and turn west on Highway 108, the Sonora Pass Road. The river is planted at the old campground located at the second bridge and at access points to just above the Leavitt Meadows store. SHERWIN CREEK - From Highway 395, turn west on Mammoth Road turnoff, approximately 10 miles north of Crowley Lake. Continue to east end of Mammoth Lakes and turn south on Old Mammoth Road. Drive 3 miles to Sherwin Creek Campground. The creek is planted from access roads on both sides of Sherwin Creek Road at Sherwin Creek Campground.

SILVER LAKE - Turn west off Highway 395 at the June Lake Loop Road and continue past June Lake, June Lake Village and Gull Lake to Silver Lake.

SWAUGER CREEK - Drive to the dirt road located 9 miles north of Bridgeport and turn east. The creek parallels Highway 395 and is planted for one-quarter mile above and below the ridge located in the campground area.

TIOGA LAKE - Travel Highway 395 to one-quarter mile south of the town of Lee Vining to Highway 120, the Tioga Pass Road. Turn west and continue for 18 miles to the lake, located just outside the entrance to Yosemite Park.

TOPAZ LAKE - Lake is located on the California-Nevada border just off Highway 395.

TRUMBULL LAKE - Drive Highway 395 to the top of Conway Summit, 17 miles north of the town of Lee Vining, and turn west on Virginia Lakes Road. The lake is on the right side of the road near Virginia Lakes Resort area.

TWIN LAKES BRIDGEPORT, UPPER AND LOWER - Turn south off Highway 395 onto Twin Lakes Road located at the north end of the town of Bridgeport and continue to the lakes.

TWIN LAKES MAMMOTH, UPPER AND LOWER - Drive Highway 395 to Mammoth Lakes Road, 10 miles north of Crowley Lake, and turn west. Twin Lakes are the first lakes on the right that you come to, approximately 7 miles up the road.

VIRGINIA CREEK, LOWER - The creek is located along the west side of Highway 395, 7 miles south of the town of Bridgeport. It is planted from Creekhouse Resort to approximately 2 miles upstream.

VIRGINIA CREEK, UPPER - Drive Highway 395 to the top of Conway Summit, 17 miles north of the town of Lee Vining, and turn west on Virginia Lakes Road. Continue to Creek Road, which veers to the left off Virginia Lakes Road. The stream is planted at access points and in the campgrounds along Creek Road until it once again joins Virginia Lakes Road at the Pack Station located at the west end of Lower Virginia Lake

VIRGINIA LAKES, UPPER AND LOWER - Travel Highway 395 to the top of Conway Summit 17 miles north of the town of Lee Vining, and turn west on Virginia Lakes Road. The lakes are at the end of the road

WALKER LAKE (LITTLE) - Travel Highway 395 to 2 miles north of the north junction of June Lake Loop Road, and turn west on the dirt road. Turn left at the fork in the road just before you reach a locked gate. Continue to the first road on the right and turn right. Drive a short distance to the Walker Lake Trailhead and park your car. Follow the footpath for a short distance to the lake.

WALKER RIVER (LITTLE) - Drive Highway 395 to 16 miles north of the town of Bridgeport and turn west on the dirt road to Obsidian Campground. This section of the river is planted throughout the campground and at nearby bridges. Return to Highway 395 and continue north for 3 miles to the campgrounds on the east side of the highway. The river is planted throughout the campground area at this location.

WALKER RIVER, SECTION II - Drive Highway 395 to where the Walker River crosses the highway 20 miles north of the town of Bridgeport. Approximately 12 miles of the river is planted at all campgrounds and at other accessible locations from the bridge to just below Mountain Gate Lodge.

Hot Creek Trout Hatchery - About 37 miles north of Bishop, or 3.5 miles south of junction Highways 395 & 203. 1 mile north of Highway 395. Near airport, watch for sign. Mono County.
