Saipan ( sai'pan ) is the largest island and capital of the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a chain of 15 tropical islands belonging to the Marianas archipelago in the western Pacific Ocean with a total area (45 sq mi). Tinian is 5 miles (8km) southwest of its sister island, Saipan.
