The Town of Telluride is a Home Municipality that is the county seat and the most populated town of San Miguel County in the southwestern portion of Colorado. The town is a former silver mining camp on the San Miguel River in the tall western San Juan Mountains. A Telluride Historic District which includes some or all of Telluride is listed on the National Historic Register and further is one of Colorado's 20 National Historic Area Landmarks. The town population was 2,222 at U.S. Census 2000.

Telluride sits in a deep box canyon. Steep forested mountains and cliffs surround it on both sides. Bridal Veil Falls is at the head of the canyon. Numerous weathered ruins of old mining operations dot the local hillsides. A free tourist gondola connects the town with its companion town Mountain Village, Colorado at the base of the ski area. Telluride and the beautiful area surrounding it has had a notable effect on pop culture. The town of Telluride has served as the backdrop for several national television commercials, is home to an international film festival, and has been the subject of many songs such as "Smugglers Blues" by the pop singer Glenn Frey, an essay by Edward Abbey, and the eponymous song by singer Tim McGraw. Telluride is also known for its famous ski resort and slopes during the winter as well as an extensive outdoor festival schedule during the summer.
