Major U.S. Airports Map — Codes, Traffic, Services, Runways

A readable summary of U.S. airport types, rankings, and notable extremes (updated Oct 21, 2025).

Airport Types & Definitions (U.S.)

By service level (FAA)

  • Commercial Service Public airports with scheduled service and ≥ 2,500 annual enplaned passengers. Split into:
    • Primary (≥ 10,000 enplanements) and classified by hub size:
      Large Hub ≥ 1% Medium Hub 0.25–<1% Small Hub 0.05–<0.25% Nonhub Primary < 0.05%
Share is of total U.S. passenger enplanements in the calendar year.
    • Nonprimary Commercial (2,500–9,999 enplanements).
  • General Aviation All other public-use airports without scheduled passenger service; categorized in the NPIAS as National, Regional, Local, Basic, or Unclassified.
  • Reliever GA airports designated to relieve congestion at nearby commercial airports.

Other common labels (plain-English)

  • International Airport with on-site CBP facilities for international arrivals (name usage is conventional).
  • Regional Smaller commercial hubs serving a metro/region (often “medium” or “small hub”).
  • Local / Community GA fields for private, instructional, and recreational flying.
  • Backcountry / Dirt Strip Unimproved or minimally improved runways, often in remote public lands.

Terms above align with FAA definitions and common U.S. usage; exact classifications can change with traffic data and program updates.

Runways — Most & Longest (Public-Use)

Most runways (major U.S. commercial fields)

  • Chicago O’Hare (ORD) — 8 active runways.
  • Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) — 7 runways.

Counts can change with airfield programs; check current airport publications.

Longest public-use runways (U.S.)

  • Denver (DEN) 16R/34L — 16,000 ft (longest public-use runway in North America).
  • New York–JFK 13R/31L — 14,511 ft.

Military/dry lakebed runways can be longer; list above focuses on civil public-use fields.

Altitude Extremes

Highest (public-use)

Lake County (Leadville, CO — KLXV) sits at approximately 9,934 ft MSL; popular for high-altitude testing and training.

Lowest (public-use)

Furnace Creek (Death Valley, CA — L06) is roughly 210 ft below sea level (−210 ft MSL), with density altitude and temperature considerations year-round.
